100th Day Celebration

Today was the 100th day of school here. School celebrated with different events and projects. Kids were invited to dress as a 100-year-old person. (Neither Sasha nor his school passes up an opportunity to dress up.) We sent this guy to kindergarten today:

I've never heard of counting the school days outside of central administration, but now I know it's used as a teaching tool in elementary schools. They keep track in the classroom with objects (in Sasha's room, the teacher uses painted clothes pins) and group them visually, like in groups of ten. For his second homework assignment of the year, Sasha had to come up with 100 things and present them in an orderly way.  His refused to choose anything over the entire week of vacation and so I decided on his behalf: faces. Mama and I helped and Sasha groaned through the entire project. Thankfully he doesn't attend a school that believes in kindergarten homework.

Rows of 5 in case you were wondering.

They also made necklaces of 100 fruit loops, crowns of $100 bills, and a 100th Day Newspaper that reported the class was 100 days smarter than the first day of school. Can't argue with that.
